Small Bathroom Designs that Pack a Punch!

We often find ourselves having conversations with our clients about how to handle a small bathroom.  Because it’s small, a natural instinct is to want to keep it simple and paint it in a light colour for fear of closing in the feeling of the small room. But that doesn’t have to be the case.  In fact, it can be the complete opposite. Small bathrooms can pack a serious punch and have plenty of impact in the home.  Here are some great examples - with tips and tricks on ways to make a small bathroom feel anything but boring.

Tile The Walls

Don’t be shy about tiling all the walls in a small bathroom.  It’s dramatic and can bring tons of personality to the room.  It’s also a practical choice for small bathrooms that can absorb a lot of moisture.  Just make sure the other pieces in the room (like the vanity, toilet and tub) are lighter in feel so they don’t compete with the tile.   In this case, we designed the vanity to be clean lined and white.

Wallpaper a Powder Room

Here’s a small powder room where we just went for it!  Bold, almost psychedelic wallpaper pairs pefectly with the white, clean lines of a wall-mounted sink to offer some relief.  And, you’ll see that we painted the ceiling and trim white as well.  It’s a ‘knock-out’ bathroom, and the brass and black light fixtures just add that final touch of drama to the room.

Don’t Be Afraid To Go Dark

Sometimes small bathrooms can be the best place to explore something that feels more dark and moody.  In this case, we dressed up a small powder room with a dramatic black and gold Chinoiserie wallpaper and paired it with crystal and brass wall sconces, and a mirror with a cut-out/see-through edge detail which allows the wallpaper to show through.  It’s a departure in feel from the rest of the house, which is light and airy, but that’s what makes it so much more interesting.

Play, Play, Play

Small bathrooms can be a great place to play with creative elements that pack a punch.  Whether it’s colour blocking with your tile choice, hanging whimsical hooks on the wall for towels, or treating the bathroom toilet area so that it doesn’t feel so functional – have fun!  These small creative choices can really change the way a space looks.
