Inspiring Wallpaper Ideas - Why Not Paper It Up?

There’s no question about it – wallpaper is springing up in more spaces and homes than ever these days. You can’t scroll through Instagram without seeing rooms covered in gorgeous, often bold and even edgy paper. And the great thing about wallpaper is, a little goes a long way to add colour, personality and quite often bring a little ‘happy’ into our homes. Check out how wallpaper has made small and large spaces that we have designed over the years, really sing!

This graphic and bright yellow wallpaper is in the front foyer of a colourful Victorian we renovated and decorated. The house is drenched in colour and whimsy, so we wallpapered the front entrance in this sunny paper to set the tone and reflect the feeling in the rest of the house. We love how it’s paired with an equally graphic black and white floor tile. Does it work? We think so!

In this master bedroom at a client’s weekend home, we chose a traditional tone-on-tone wallpaper from Farrow & Ball that took drab ‘builder’s’ dry wall and elevated it to make it feel a little more country and a lot less city. Notice how we painted the trim around the windows and baseboard a creamy taupe to blend in with the paper? This puts the emphasis on the wallpaper and not the trim, which was our intention.

This updated take on a traditional chinoiserie paper fits this elegant master bedroom to a tee. The bedroom was a very large space that felt cold and empty when we first saw it. By papering all the walls in this loose branch pattern with lots of movement in it, it helped warm up the room and made it feel less cavernous. Paint just wouldn’t have had the same impact.

Who puts wallpaper in a kitchen????? We did in this dream cook’s kitchen! The paper is playful, colourful and kicks this kitchen into high gear. We only papered one area of the room so as not to overwhelm the space and we did it in the prep area where vegetables and other ingredients are washed and laid out for big meals. The pattern - with rhubarb, herbs and luscious wild flowers - adds added inspiration! The wallpaper is vinyl too so impervious to water.
