Condo Magic

Featured in the September issue of Style at Home magazine, our Beech House Condo is one of our most colourful and bold homes to date. Emily took a modest, new-build condo and created a small but mighty home for empty nesters looking to change how they live. See how she played with scale, pattern, colour and style in this anything-but-boring project.

In the Living Room, blush sofas keep the space feeling light and airy, while the dark greeny/black of the fireplace grounds the room. With the addition of vintage 70's art on the walls, a dramatic Martha Sturdy sculpture and loads of colourful, patterned, hand blocked pillows, this room really sings in teal, pink and ochre.

In order to create another sitting area in the condo for TV watching, we took a windowless room, widened the opening to let in light, hung two antique doors for privacy, and designed a cozy den/guest room. Grasscloth walls, a sleeper sofa, built-in storage and a teeny weeny powder room papered in floating feathers, make this not only a multi-purpose living space, but our clients' favourite spot to chill in the evenings.

In a home with as many bold design choices as this one, we felt it was important to create some relief, so the kitchen was kept über simple. The cabinets are flat stock - painted white with no uppers - and the only 'wow' factor is the gorgeous mottled backsplash that looks like it was found in Morocco. The dining room is also quiet, with teal Gubi chairs providing the only pop of colour.

We like a good dose of surprise in the spaces we design over here at GRIFFIN HOUGHTON. So, in the front hall, we chose an ethereal cloud wallpaper and a modern black and white bench to not give too much away in terms of what the rest of the condo looks like.
